PORT AUTHORITY ANNUAL D.C. FLY-IN TO CAPITOL HILL SET

Public-Private Delegation Brings Defense Jobs-Focused Agenda
HEATH –The Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority will lead a contingent of public and private officials to Washington, D.C. to meet with key members and staff of the Ohio Congressional Delegation. The event is set for tomorrow, Wednesday, February 26.

A 10-person public-private contingent will meet with 12th Congressional District Representative Troy Balderson in his Capitol Hill office and which is expected to include others with the Central Ohio Congressional Delegation. Meetings in the offices of U.S. Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman are also scheduled.

The purpose of the day is to better acquaint Ohio’s Congressional Delegation with the status of key military work at the Central Ohio Aerospace and Technology Center. The 58-year legacy of deterrent workload and modernization of the Air Force Primary Standards Laboratory are key issue points.

Officials from major employers at the Port Authority’s Aerospace Center campus—Boeing, Bionetics, and Defense Engineering Services Group—are attending along with local leaders, including City of Heath Mayor Mark Johns, Licking County Commissioner Tim Bubb, Licking County Treasurer Oliva Parkinson, Licking County Chamber of Commerce President Jennifer McDonald, and Port Authority CEO Rick Platt.

PORT AUTHORITY PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETING ANNOUNCED

HEATH, OHIO – The Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority has scheduled a meeting of the Planning Committee of the Board of Directors, for Monday, February 3 at 3:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the boardroom of the Port Authority offices at 851 Irving Wick Drive West, Heath, Ohio. The Committee is expected to review submittals for a safety stair tower project, review submittals for protective covenants, and consider a draft capital plan update.

Committee meetings are open to the public.

PORT AUTHORITY 2020 BOARD MEETINGS ANNOUNCED

HEATH, OHIO – The Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority announced its Board of Director’s meeting schedule for 2020. The meetings are held starting at 3:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every other month in the conference room at the Port Authority offices, 851 Irving-Wick Drive West, Heath.

The schedule is as follows:

February 11
April 14
June 9
August 11
October 13
December 8

Board meetings are preceded, at 2:30 p.m., by regular meetings of the Port Authority standing committees, if needed. The committees include finance, personnel, community projects, and planning.

The Board of Directors consists of nine members, three appointed by each of the City of Heath, City of Newark, and Licking County Commissioners. Board meetings and committee meetings are open to the public. For more information, visit the Port Authority’s web site at hnlcpa.com.

Thanksgiving Dinner Talking Points Memo

Here’s my annual contribution to the holiday dinner table talking points just ahead of Thanksgiving this year. I’m glad to do it.

Thanksgiving is the right time to not only give thanks but also give reasons for our loved ones to improve their job skills, move back home, or find a job closer to home. From my point of view, there’s a bounty of good reasons right here and now.

The Port Authority’s campus in Heath stands out as a barometer of a continued good economy. With a record six new buildings underway on the campus this year, it’s easy to predict that increased job opportunities are coming along with those new buildings. They are.

Got someone at the table not eating turkey? They aren’t alone. Plant-based food is a national trend, and it’s found its way to Licking County too. It’s astonishing. We’ve gone from zero to over 200,000 square feet of building space in just two years. That’s three and a half football fields worth of new work.

Companies on the Port Authority campus are engaged in this emerging sector of the food industry. GB Food, Gushen America, Gathered Foods, and Nature’s One all are either ramping up production or finishing new buildings. Hiring is underway.

Don’t believe the national media angle that manufacturing is shrinking. It’s not true here. Ohio surpassed 700,000 manufacturing jobs in 2019 and evidence builds every day that Ohio will increasingly be the bread basket for the World.

Ten “spec” buildings in ten years is making Central Licking County a model for how to set the table for future jobs. Governor Mike DeWine brought a spotlight to a dual groundbreaking ceremony when two speculatively-built industrial buildings of 70,000 sq. ft. by Southgate and 20,000 sq. ft. by the Port Authority began. This construction is for future, yet-unknown firms. See next year’s talking points memo for the rest of the story.

Ariel Corporation is tripling the size of their building with work underway right now preparing to accept a larger, future manufacturing workforce. Kaiser Aluminum and Samuel Packaging Systems have recent capital investments to prove the point.

A new Force Lab at the Air Force Primary Standards Laboratory was recently completed with one-of-a-kind equipment expected to arrive in the first half of 2020. Bionetics and AFMETCAL run this modern laboratory. Skilled technicians are always in demand by these companies as well as by Boeing and MISTRAS Group on our campus.

Don’t let the tryptophan kick in before you share how to take action.

Thankfully, there are many more examples of growing job opportunities in Licking County than my little talking points memo has room to add. Enjoy that holiday gathering, but sure don’t leave out some job talk to digest.

Port Authority Elects Officers

PORT AUTHORITY ELECTS OFFICERS

HEATH, OHIO – The Board of Directors of the Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority elected officers at its regular June meeting. Stephen Layman was re-elected Chairman and Fred Paul was re-elected Vice Chairman/Secretary for one-year terms.

Layman has served as Chairman of the Port Authority Board since June 1998. He is a Licking County appointee to the Board and is a real estate broker with Shai Commercial Real Estate.

Paul was elected to his fifth term as Vice Chairman/Secretary. He is a Heath appointee to the Board and is retired from Rockwell and C-TEC.

The Board of Directors consists of nine members, three appointed by each of the City of Heath, City of Newark, and Licking County Commissioners. The Port Authority owns and develops the Central Ohio Aerospace & Technology Center in Heath and is the largest self-sustaining port authority in Ohio.
