It's been 16 years ago that Newark AFB learned of its pending closure, 43 years since the base's newspaper, On Target, was first published, and over 45 years since the establishment of a guidance and metrology operation in Heath. From a complete collection of On Target newspapers and other archives, the Port Authority's Bill Wright creates a month-by-month look at The Base through the years.

One Year Ago - November 2008
Storm Damage repair restarts. The port authority wrapped up an extensive repair to the high bay roof on Building 4 and dozens of patch jobs within days of the Hurricane Ike spawned wind storm. Ike's cost to repair property damage exceeded $450,000.


5 Years Ago - November 2004
PORT AUTHORITY WEATHER STATION BRINGS NATIONAL RECOGNITION
"Weather Club e-News," the e-newsletter for Davis Instruments, gave top billing to the Port Authority under the headline "Vantage Pro is This Landlord's Right Hand Man" and with a lot of tongue in cheek. The purpose of the humorous piece was to point out Bruce Boylan's creative use of temperature sensors imbedded in pavement as a way to predict freezing conditions. The Port Authority, as you can see, is proud of its role as a property manager.


10 Years Ago - November 1999
Port Authority office construction complete. With AFMETCAL moving to Building 2, the Port Authority vacated that location and moved into the newly renovated pass and ID/ BX buildings. A major modification joined the two existing buildings together and allowed the Port Authority staff to be located in one building.


20 Years Ago - November 1989
Deputy Director of Maintenance transfers to Hill AFB. She had been called the "architect" of the Maintenance reorganization because of the significant role she played. "Her excellent work in two very important areas have had a significant impact on the center and the way we will prepare for DMMIS," said Col. Daniel Flournoy. Col. Flournoy credits Ms. Duffy as the executor of the Maintenance reorganization.


25 Years Ago - November 1984
Civil engineers say Building 4 roof leak-free now. For the first time in 20 years, the roof on building 4 didn't leak. In 1979, Civil Engineering started an eight part phased program of replacing the various sections of roofing on the building with the goal of ending the roof leaks, providing a "20-year roof" and establishing a roof management program.


30 Years Ago - November 1979
Maintenance Produces 20,000th 2171AB/W displacement gyro. Nov. 7, 1979 was an important day for personnel in maintenance's displacement gyro area. On that day production of the 2171 series reached the 20,000 milestone. Production of the 2171 series began in November 1973.


40 Years Ago - November 1969
Another AGMC milestone was achieved when the 8,000th LN-12 platform for the inertial navigation system of the F-4 Phantom aircraft was prepared for shipment in Shops repair area. Production of the LN-12 dates back to April 1965 when the first system was produced here. Requirements remained steady at approximately 250 systems per month.
