It's been 16 years ago that Newark AFB learned of its pending closure, 43 years since the base's newspaper, On Target, was first published, and over 45 years since the establishment of a guidance and metrology operation in Heath. Time Capsule Opened. The time capsule was successfully opened today and its contents were set on display by some of the distinguished "Alumni." The contents, in general, appeared to be in relatively good condition. Some water damage occurred to items stored on the bottom of the capsule and everything was at least slightly damp. There was an inventory of the contents in the top of the capsule.

The capsule's stone marker bore instructions to open in the year 2026. The Port Authority decided the risk of damage to the contents could occur during a move outweighed the desire to adhere to the wishes transmitted from 1976. The capsule needed to be moved because the east side parking lot reconfiguration. The contents were made a permanent loan to The Works and a portion of its contents remain on display on the second floor of The Works.

AGMC employees react to "bad guys". Newark AFB was invaded by a group of squanders. They were here to expose and exploit any security weaknesses that could be found. They tried to ride through the gate but they were apprehended. Next they checked the fence looking for a way to get in and had no luck. Every attempted penetration was a frustrated and met with a rapid armed response. The employees here reacted to the bad guys, a SAVE (Security Awareness Vulnerability Evaluation) team from headquarters. The performance of AGMC set the standard for Air Force Logistics Command.

Former technical assistant award nominee. Wallace L. Horton was nominated for the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy for his outstanding contributions to Air Force aviation in Inertial Guidance and navigation. Col. Thomas Lawton, the first commander at NAFS, explained Horton's role in this way, "No other person presently or in the past connected with the Heath Annex has played so vital a part in bringing it from concept to completion. No other individual has so clearly seen the need for such a facility nor done so much to convince others of the vital role such a project would play in the area of missile guidance and Air Force calibration support. I believe that without him this project would never have been brought into being."
