One Year Ago - October 2008
Air Force Clean-up Project Starts. Redevelopment isn't easy. With a major assist from Congressman Zack Space to remove a 12-year log jam, the Air Force Real Property Agency was convinced to let a contract to begin cleanup of a 0.75 acre parcel on land of the former Newark Air Force Base in Heath. Cleanup started, then stalled over a contract issue, and then restarted. The project included removal of the contaminated soil with hopes of transferring a clean site to the Port Authority.

LAST CHANCE TO GET BASE COMMEMORATIVE
Boeing, Bionetics, BAE Systems, the Heath Rec Center, the Port Authority, and the Licking County Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) joined forces to benefit the United Way of Licking County. Wooden, eight-inch by three-and-one-half inch commemoratives of the Base manufactured by Ohio-based Cat's Meow were made available for sale for just $20.

Boeing Lands USAF job. The Boeing Company was awarded a $1.3 billion, 15 year contract from the USAF to continue to repair guidance systems for nuclear missiles and navigation systems for military airplanes. This was a follow-up to the original contract awarded in 1995. The contract is scheduled for review every 5 years, but essentially guaranteed the same work will continue at the center for 15 years.

Union president Lura Garvin leaving. Lura Garvin began her career at AGMC in 1967, joined the union in 1976 and became a steward that same year. Following a stint as Executive Vice President of Local 2221, Garvin assumed duties as union president in 1991. Garvin took a job in the private sector with a law firm in Florida.

Employees join in hero's mock trial. Four Newark AFB employees participated in the Johnny Clem Mock Trial, as key people attempt to verify the legends surrounding "Johnny Shiloh" the Newark native, believed to be the youngest participant in the Civil War. An article published refutes Clem's claims, saying he embellished his record. Participating from Newark AFB were Kevin Bennett, an attorney in the Judge Advocate Office, Al Stewart, coordinator of the event, Larry Stevens and Rick Turner participated as Civil War re-enactors that served as part of the honor guard within the court room. The military court-martial took place at the Licking County Courthouse. In an attempt to resolve the dispute the sponsors enlisted the assistance of the Thirtieth Ohio Infantry re-enactors to stage the mock court-martial symbolic of the style of the 1860's.

Israeli officers visit Metrology. Four Israeli Air Force officers visited the Directorate of Metrology for a two-day briefing on the Type I Air Force Measurements Standards Laboratory located here. The Israelis were her to study the manner in which the AFMSL is structured as a prelude to the possibility of that nation building a similar lab.
30 Years Ago - October 1979
Hot water restored to restrooms. The hot water tanks were disconnected in March 1979 as a means to reduce our energy cost and our consumption, Don Hunt, chairman of the AGMC Energy Program said. "We saved about $1,000 per month above the cost of actual electricity used. A contract was let to install devices allowing our Energy Management and Control System to automatically turn off the heaters when a peak is occurring and to turn them back on when the peak has passed, Hunt announced.
35 Years Ago - October 1974
8,000th Donor. A routine blood donation for Larry Gregg, his 22nd pint, became a significant milestone in NAFS history in the blood program. Gregg was the 8,000th donor since the program began here in 1967.
40 Years Ago - October 1969
Frank Flynn graduates from AFIT with honors. The first AGMC employee to be sent to the Air Force Institute of Technology for work toward a master's degree, Frank Flynn graduated with distinction from the Institute's School of Systems and Logistics. Flynn attended the school located at Wright-Patterson AFB for one year. Mr. Flynn is currently a member of the Port Authority Board of Directors.
