It's been more than 10 years ago that Newark AFB learned of its pending closure,
more than 40 years since the base's newspaper, On Target, was first published, and 45 years
since the establishment of a guidance and metrology operation in Heath. From a complete collection of
On Target newspapers and other archives,
the Port Authority's Bill Wright created a month-by-month look at The Base through the years.
One Year Ago - August 2006
AWACS-ESM Day One. Boeing cut the ribbon on its new workload area for the AWACS-ESM workload as part of a transition ceremony. Ohio Lt. Governor Bruce Johnson told the audience for the ribbon cutting that his father, Lt. Col. Hal Johnson, worked here at The Base in the 60's and 70's. He also referred to the COATC as "Ohio's finest example of a public-private partnership." The Port Authority commissioned full page ads in The Advocate and Our Town to mark the occasion and welcome the Texas families.

Platt Begins Work. The Port Authority welcomed Rick Platt as its new Executive Director. Platt was hired to increase the Port Authority's role in economic development and to reinvigorate relations with federal, state, and local officials.
15 Years Ago - August 1992
Security police team brings home the gold. The security police team of Robert Fralick, Keith Klug, Michael Baker, and Brian Dickerson won the gold medal in the combat pistol event held in Hill AFB, Utah. Keith Klug was selected as a member of the prestigious 12-member AFMC Worldwide team to compete at Air Force level at Kirkland AFB, N.M.
20 Years Ago - August 1987
An open house celebrating 25 years of Newark AFS is attended by many. One of the activities viewed by the crowd saw 12 cadets from the "Wings of Blue" make a perfect parachute landing at Heath Airport. Also Col. Lawton, first Newark AFS commander, was on hand to accept a flag from Col. Powell.
25 Years Ago - August 1982
Combined credit union and bank machine is first in Air Force. The ATM that was installed at Post 3 was shared by the credit union and Park National Bank. This was the first time that an ATM machine had been shared by a credit union and a bank on an Air Force installation.
30 Years Ago - August 1977
AGMC Nominated Chuck Wolfe for the Air Force Civil Engineering Foreman of the Year Award. Wolfe was foreman of the electrical section where he supervised 10 civilian and two military personnel. He was nominated for his leadership ability, technical competence, initiative, resourcefulness and job performance.
35 Years Ago - August 1972
With Pride in the Past. The new AGMC sign on Building 4 proclaims to visitors and the public for the first time our identity and our pride in our work that is so vital to the nation's security. The phrase "Center of Excellence" was accentuated at this time with the announcement that AGMC had been selected as the 1972 recipient of the AFLC Maintenance Award.
40 Years Ago - August 1967
James Curp, calibration systems support section, was the first individual to receive the section's newly-established Zero Defects award for producing high quality correspondence.
