It's been more than 10 years ago that Newark AFB learned of its pending closure and more than 40 years since the base's newspaper, On Target, was first published. From a complete collection of On Target newspapers, the Port Authority's Bill Wright created a month-by-month look at The Base through the years.

One Year Ago - January 2006
$3.8 Million in Capital Projects. The Port Authority sought bids for water tower and roof repair projects that, combined with other projects planned by the Port Authority for 2006, totaled over $3.8 million.


5 Years Ago - January 2002
COATC Grows. The Port Authority closed on the purchase of 260 acres of real property from Kaiser Aluminum, a move that expands the COATC land holdings to 350 acres. The acquisition is part of a strategy to sustain and grow the economic impact of the COATC. The Port Authority plans to undertake improvements to the property to prepare it for future industrial development.


15 Years Ago - January 1992
Two major construction projects for Building 4 begin. The largest project is the installation of sprinklers throughout most of building 4. The sprinklers constituted the third phase of a major upgrade in fire detection and protection. The other major project was installing "swipe" entry to limit access into building 4.


20 Years Ago - January 1987
Daley selected for Senior Executive Service. Ed Daley, deputy director of maintenance leaves for a senior executive service position at Kelley AFB, Texas. He was deputy director since July 1984.


25 Years Ago - January 1982
The Old and The New. Building 2 ,shown in the picture above, had large areas of glass removed and siding installed to improve appearance and energy savings. In 2006 the Port Authority again made upgrades to the existing doors and windows in Building 2 to help with energy savings.


30 Years Ago - January 1977
Snow Damage. Weight from a recent snow storm caused the canopy alongside Building 2 and the café to collapse. Only one person was on the sidewalk at the time and he escaped with minor bruises.


35 Years Ago - January 1972
Capt. Workman Awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Capt. Joseph Workman was presented the award for meritorious service as Officer in Charge of the Avionics Branch 14th Field Maintenance Squadron, Phan Rang AB Vietnam. The captain came to AGMC following his assignment in Vietnam.


40 Years Ago - January 1976
Annex Space to be Cut in Half. The NAFS will relinquish half of the space presently leased from Kaiser Aluminum for the NAFS Annex. Kaiser had requested to take over another floor in the building. NAFS was able to return the space with the adding of a new mezzanine being added to Building 4 which gave NFAS thousands of square feet of new office space. The Kaiser Annex building was destroyed by fire in April of 2002.

An ad for Super Duper in January 1967 shows chuck roast for $.39 a pound and giant size Tide laundry detergent for $.69.
