WEATHER STATION

Yes, the weather station and WeatherCam are nice to find out, from your work desk, what is happening on the Base weather-wise.  It’s time to start checking from your home before you head in here.  And, this particular time of the season, is a particularly good time to watch the pavement and bridge temperatures shown in the first table on the left hand side of the weather station page.  If you see temperatures are below freezing (32ºF) and the ground is wet, be on the lookout for ice.  You may not see snow and you might not know it is there otherwise but the combo of water and cold pavement/bridge surfaces is a predictor that “black ice” conditions exist.  Be careful!

OUT WITH THE GRACKLES!

While the annoying little birds that invaded the patio outside of the Flightline Café winter in the Gulf of Mexico, the Port Authority will be unceremoniously removing their summer home.  Also, say goodbye to the plastic decoy owls.  Facilities teams with Boeing and the Port Authority as well as custodial contractor Goodwill fought those little grackles all summer long with increased maintenance, increased power washing, and, even, little plastic owls hung in the trees.  We humans lost.  After expert consultations and pursuit of other ideas, the only reasonable resort was to remove several trees and trim back others.  This plan is in the works.  A preview of the patio with fewer trees is online at the Project Status Report page.

AFTER THE FINAL WORD

Here are updates on a few items that we mentioned in the past and said were the final word on it.

·         Time Capsule:  The Newark AFB Bicentennial time capsule, dug up in June, was made a permanent loan to The Works museum in Newark.  About 40 Base advocates and former Base employees gathered on Veteran’s Day to view the unveiling of the new Works display about the Base created from the contents of the time capsule.  Check it out!

·         If you ordered a Cat’s Meow of the Base:  If you paid for one of these, be sure to see your captain to get your piece.  The pieces, as promised, are now in and are being distributed.  The All-Base United Way Fundraiser met its sales goal.  Thank you to everyone involved in selling and buying!

·         If you didn’t order a Cat’s Meow of the Base and regret your decision:  A few (and we mean very few) extras were ordered.  Ask Dennis Rogers (http://hnlcpa.com/port/inquiryl.htm) at the Port Authority to find out how you might be able to get one.
