Vol. 2, SPECIAL EDITION

TIME CAPSULE OPENED TODAY

Notes from Bruce Boylan, Senior Manager, Facilities

The time capsule was successfully opened today and its contents were set on display by some of the distinguished “Alumni”. The contents in general appeared to be in relatively good condition with some water damage occurred to items stored on the bottom of the capsule and everything was at least slightly damp. There was an inventory of the contents in the top and we’ll get that into a later “On Target Special Edition”. Pictures from the opening will be placed on the web site. For the first one go to:

Quite a trip down memory lane, here’s a few of the highlights…….

Bicentennial flag: That brings back to mind the parade of “tall ships” in New York harbor during the summer of 1976.

Local telephone book: Didn’t seem to be as thick as the current phone books.

Commanders briefing on video tape: If you asked yourself if we played it, then you were born after 1976. Wound on a reel and about 2” wide, this item was in the bottom of the capsule and was very damp

Equipment samples: If you didn’t work with it you’ll never understand what it was. These people were proud of what they did and some of those parts were signed by the people in that shop.

Uniforms: A lot of Polyester there. The fabric was well preserved names, insignias, and ribbons still on .

Pictures: Some from on the job, some of a personal nature.

Letters stamps, coins, documents, 63 items in all according to the inventory. Two in particular are just begging for more attention.

How about materials written by second and third graders from McGuffey Elementary school?. That figures out to a graduation around 1985 or 1986. A twenty year reunion due for them next year.

Lastly, one item didn’t make it into the capsule but fell into the vault. Pinned in place beneath all of that history for 28 years.

Charles E. Cross, I have your ID card.
