It's been more than 10 years ago that Newark AFB learned of its pending closure, more than 40 years since the base's newspaper, On Target, was first published, and 45 years since the establishment of a guidance and metrology operation in Heath. From a complete collection of On Target newspapers and other archives, the Port Authority's Bill Wright created a month-by-month look at The Base through the years.

10-Year Celebration. A host of officials, including Boeing's Roger Krone, marked the occasion of the 10 years since Privatization in Place. Krone remarked about the "strong Ohio work ethic" and labeled PIP "wildly successful." The Port Authority ceremoniously burned its 10-year Air Force mortgage at the event with long-time Base advocate Wally Horton doing the honors.

On Target Revived. The long-time Newark AFB newspaper, On Target, was revived in electronic form with the onset of the On Target e-Newsletter. The electronically-distributed publication was part of a revived website targeted at on-Base personnel. Later in 2002 the website was expanded to include real-time entry of news stories by on-Base personnel to On Target News online. Both features remain, five years later, a central part of OnTheBase.com.

Mr. Eaton was referring to a Newark AFB police officer earning the coveted "AFLC Most Valuable Competitor Award." This was the second year in a row Newark police officers have brought home this trophy from the highly competitive Peacekeeper Challenge competition.
