It's been more than 10 years ago that Newark AFB learned of its pending closure and more than 40 years since the base's newspaper, On Target, was first published. From a complete collection of On Target newspapers, the Port Authority's Bill Wright created a month-by-month look at The Base through the years.

One Year Ago - March 2006
"Mission Accomplished." Boeing - Heath Center Director Bob Weideman retired at the end of March after remarkable career of service to Boeing as well as to The Base and the community. His Boeing colleagues hosted a retirement dinner at Moundbuilders Country Club and the Port Authority adopted a resolution commending him for his years of service. Mike Emmelhainz was named Weideman's replacement.


15 Years Ago - March 1992
Pauline Wolfe, chief of Operations Support Division was cited for her ability to handle heavy responsibilities with direct involvement in supporting Desert Storm Shield/Desert Storm operations which resulted in the acceleration of the critical assets required in the production of surged items. She received the citation during the Commander's Service Award ceremony.


20 Years Ago - March 1987
Longfellow's Suggestion saves $200,000. For his suggestion Ray Longfellow was presented an award by Col. Lloyd Powell, the AGMC commander. Ray's suggestion was to use oversized pivots in order to salvage parts that would otherwise be condemned. Past practice was to scrap end housings that had been reworked to the point that the standard pivots no longer would fit. This move saved the Air Force $210,446.


25 Years Ago - March 1982
SURE-PAY at AGMC. Sure-Pay was the sure-fire system for paying AGMC employees and the system used was pioneered here at AGMC and was copied by Wright-Patterson AFB and was set to become the standard for the direct-deposit system in the Air Force.


30 Years Ago - March 1977
In little more than a year, AGMC has produced 100 KT-76 inertial measurement units. The first unit was produced Jan. 30th 1975. The work is performed by Aircraft Product Division's KT-70 systems and electronics shop.


35 Years Ago - March 1972
AGMC Assigned SRA for F-15 Aircraft. AGMC was assigned the specialized repair activity for the AN/ASN-109 inertial navigation measuring unit (LN-30) for the Air Force's F-15 advanced tactical fighter.


40 Years Ago - March 1967
CCTV- The Eyes and Ears of NAFS. NAFS-TV was not just an entertainment medium but rather a valuable tool for training, education, and motivation where it could reach large or small groups in varied areas with a specific message. Fast forward 40 years and Base TV returns. The Port Authority will be introducing Base TV to its OnTheBase.com website.
