It's been 16 years ago that Newark AFB learned of its pending closure, 43 years since the base's newspaper, On Target, was first published, and over 45 years since the establishment of a guidance and metrology operation in Heath. From a complete collection of On Target newspapers and other archives, the Port Authority's Bill Wright creates a month-by-month look at The Base through the years.

Safety NETwork goes to work, fast. Safety issues can't wait for a meeting. With that basic fact in mind, the Port Authority established and began using SAFETY NETwork, a new tool for on-site safety professionals and leadership to quickly share safety concerns amongst each other. Last years new schedule of tornado siren testing, train derailment blockage, and last minute power line work crews deployment were quick examples of where the e-mail network was used to share safety issues-fast.

PROJECTS ADVANCE With the ending of the Base Campus' most visible project, the West Side Parking Lot Reconstruction Project, complete, some may think all the work was done for the summer. Hardly. A major roof replacement was underway along with several other projects impacting the Base and South campuses. Boeing was underway with erecting two new all-weather outdoor shelters catering to smokers. Two waterline projects were underway. As always, the online Project Status Report tells the latest story.

"Giant-killers win AFMC Defender Cup. When Peacekeeper Challenge teams from all over Air Force Material Command lined up for the big one down at Eglin AFB, the team from AGMC was bucking some pretty long odds. There were 13 other teams and 84 security police competitors in all. All teams had six participants. That's where the long odds came in. There were only 28 airmen, all told, here in the Security Police. Most air bases had more than that on one shift back at home base. Not a big talent pool to choose from. Depends on who you talked to. Especially since the first-ever, number one, 9mm-shooting, cargo-net climbing, machine-gun-toting, rough and ready Defender Cup champions were our own team from Newark Air Force Base.

Bridge repair to close main entrance for 60 days. August 1979 saw the closing of the west side entrance bridge for 60 days, forcing all traffic to exit through the east side gate. The bridge was in need of repair after many years of wear and tear from salt runoff during the winter. The bridge was built in 1952-1953. Now, in 2009 as we cope with the new construction that has occurred around The Base causing changing traffic patterns, it turns out it's really nothing new to the Base.

Another significant milestone in AGMC history occurred on Aug. 22, 1974 when the 2000th Titan II inertial missile unit was produced.

Minuteman III Area Opened. Gen. Friedman snipped the ribbon officially opening the Minuteman III facility. Installation, checkout and demonstration of MMIII guidance system equipment would begin in October with full test and repair operations on the guidance system scheduled to begin the following June. Now, in 2009, a major asbestos abatement project and roof project sees this structure modernized.
