It's been 16 years ago that Newark AFB learned of its pending closure, 43 years since the base's newspaper, On Target, was first published, and over 45 years since the establishment of a guidance and metrology operation in Heath. From a complete collection of On Target newspapers and other archives, the Port Authority's Bill Wright creates a month-by-month look at The Base through the years.

One Year Ago - April 2008
Webinar Hosting Begins. The port Authority began it's first hosting of a Webinar (web-based seminar). This first webinar was put on by site selection guru Robert Ady. Ady Put on a PowerPoint with conference calling and presented to international audiences. Sponsorship of the webinar series is part of the Port Authority's role in providing leadership for economic development for all of Licking County.


5 Years Ago - April 2004
ONTHEBASE.COM DEBUTS As part of a strategy to embrace use of the nickname, The Base, to refer to COATC's original AFB property, COATC.com has spun off a new web site targeted at personnel and visitors to the Base campus of the COATC. The popular Weather Station, WeatherCam, Project Report, On Target News, and other features of COATC.com have migrated to the new web site. A new Base calendar, tenant news, and Base-focused advertising are among the items in the works.


15 Years Ago - April 1994
AGMC worker wins Air Force Award. Richard Hickman, a work leader in MA was selected as the individual recipient of the Lt. Gen Leo Marquez Award for Maintenance Personnel in the Outstanding Missile Maintenance Category for Civilian Personnel. AGMC nominees frequently win at the Air Force Material Command level but not as frequently at the Air Force level. Hickman's career at AGMC to this date was 27 years.


20 Years Ago - April 1989
AFLC's Quality Bill of rights adopted. In an effort to "encourage each member of Air Force Logistics Command to initiate responsible action to contribute to safety, quality and productivity," Gen. Alfred G. Hansen, commander, and AFLC quality council adopted AFLC's first Quality Bill of Rights. By following the Quality Bill of Rights, each worker in AFLC can help improve products and service by sensible exercise of their rights.


25 Years Ago - April 1984
Area scientists develop light measuring method. Scientists from neighboring, yet unrelated agencies, united to solve a long-standing problem in achieving accurate measurement of light intensity. Newark AFS issued a contract with Denison University's physics department to design the system which uses a silicon detector to convert light particles into an electrical current. The process was needed in the AGMC infrared and Laser Standards Laboratory. The project took 17 months to complete.


35 Years Ago - April 1974
Anechoic Chamber. Microwave Lab Builds New Facility. The Chamber, located on the main floor of Building 4, was used to calibrate radiation leakage detectors for microwave ovens, as well as standard antennas and densitometers. The chamber was lined with polyurethane blocks to absorb high power microwave energy and reduce reflection due to metallic objects in the calibration area. In 2006 a new anechoic chamber was built in building 4 when a workload was transferred to Heath from Texas.


40 Years Ago - March 1969
Milestone. Minuteman II production hit another milestone on April 3, 1969 when the 2000th system left AGMC repair shops for shipment to the field.
