It's been more than 10 years ago that Newark AFB learned of its pending closure and more than 40 years since the base's newspaper, On Target, was first published. From a complete collection of On Target newspapers, the Port Authority's Bill Wright created a month-by-month look at The Base through the years.

Samuel Manu-Tech Breaks Ground. Just 1,500 feet south of Building 4, ground has been broken for the newest, large building at the COATC--the manufacturing facilities for Samuel Manu-Tech. This will also be a major, earth-moving endeavor that's truly unmatched since 54 years ago when Building 4 was built. Its access, until a new roadway is built, will be via Kaiser Drive.

Fire! On April 16, the former Kaiser Aluminum headquarters building, acquired by the Port Authority as part of its property acquisition in January, succumbed to a major fire. Fourteen fire departments responded to the fire, but the building was a total loss and had to be razed. The three-story office building had a long-time affiliation with the base, serving as the annex for Newark Air Force Station in the 1960's.

Record set at Cake Auction. There were bunnies in every shape and flavor, edible credit cards and even the traditional among the 43 cakes donated to the Helping Hands cake auction. When bidding finally ended and the final cake left the room, generous bidders had donated $1,842 to the on-base charity. It surpassed the previous year's total of $1400. Helping Hands assisted employees and their families in times of extreme emergencies.

by Dave Handley-- The "CRACK OF THE BAT" ushers in another season of baseball and softball to the area. As both professional and amateur teams take the field, they will rely on what is commonly referred to as the home field advantage. A good example is the Boston Red Sox and their friendly confines better known as Fenway Park and the infamous Green Monster. Did you know that NAFB once had its own version of the "Green Monster"?

Twenty years ago the Newark Air Force Base recreational teams played their games on a temporary field that was used during the construction of the Radiac Lab. This field was located west of the railroad tracks at the current location of Buildings 125 and 106. Constrained by the small size of the field, a large fence was constructed in left field to prevent the loss of balls in the nearby woods. The only remnant of the heated contests once waged on this field is a rusting relic of this same tall fence braced against a large Sycamore tree.

Many want-to-be power hitters were aided in their quest by routinely ringing ground rule doubles off of this fence. Of course, the true power hitters of day still cleared the fence with ease only to break the silence of summer with the shattering of Sycamore tree limbs. So goes the memories of the boys and girls of summer.
